My interest in art began at school as well as watching my elder sister complete her homework. Susan introduced me to the magic of Caren D’ache pencils.
I was interested in collecting post cards, which developed into sketching them. It was several years later whilst on holiday with my wife Caroline in the Lakes that I was introduced to watercolour by an artist who was demonstrating his skills in a gallery in Keswick. Caroline encouraged me to look for an evening course, which I found in Keyworth and so began my journey into the world of painting.
Caroline was a magnificent influence on me with her support and her interest in watercolours. We would often visit galleries and she would purchase cards. We both shared a love of the Lakes as well as visiting other parts of Britain, which further fuelled my interest. She was always keen to frame my work and suggest subjects to paint..
Caroline had witnessed the difficulties I was experiencing with the firm I was working for at first hand during lock-down. She just wanted me to be happy and therefore we made the decision that I should finish work in 2021 for health reasons. I had not realised that my work was having such a detrimental effect on me and the people I love until I finished. We were happy and began to enjoy life again, although this was cut short when Caroline passed away suddenly in October 2021... a special person that I will always miss.
We had discussed the possibility of forming an arts and crafts business together. Therefore, I have decided to try and continue with our vision... Langstrath Arts was born.
This is the name chosen by Caroline as it reminded her of many enjoyable family holidays spent at Borrowdale in the Lake District. Happy times spent in Stonethwaite and particularly at The Langstrath Country Inn.
Much of my art has been inspired by the scenery of the Lakes in an attempt to recreate memories of this beautiful landscape.
I enjoy exploring new techniques and in particular experimenting with all types of media. My prime aim is to produce something that I am comfortable with but also that others may like.
Watercolour: I use artist quality paints manufactured by Winsor and Newton, Jackman's Art Materials and Sennelier as well as various inks and Inktense paints.
Acrylic: I use a variety paints manufactured by Sennelier, Daler Rowney, Winsor & Newton as well as Jackman's Art Materials. I have developed techniques using texture paste and inks inspired by Marion Boddy-Evans.
Oil Pastel: I use Sennelier soft oil pastel and blend the colours to produce a variety of work.
Soft Pastel: I have enjoyed using this medium which is difficult to fix and therefore the picture will need to be framed.
My subjects vary from landscapes to animals as well as exploring figurative work such as the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit stories. I have produced a number of works for others and I can do that for you.
A series of paintings inspired by the works of Tolkien...
MoreI had a dream about travelling around Scotland to sketch and paint the beautiful landscape. I fulfilled this dream in March 2023.
